Many people who visit HowToBuyAFranchise.com are further along on the journey of becoming a franchisee than was franchisee Mark Brownstein a year ago. Nearing the age of 60, with a lifetime experience of running successful small businesses, Brownstein admits that he didn’t know much about franchising when he purchased a My Elder Advocate franchise. And what he did know, he discovered, wasn’t always true!
Assumptions can kill opportunities
Here are a few assumptions that Brownstein had about franchising:
- There are very few franchise brands in limited industries
- Buying a franchise is more expensive than he could afford
- Franchising wouldn’t allow him to continue being an entrepreneur
- Franchisees aren’t necessarily passionate about their businesses
Initially working with a career coach, who spurred his interest in learning more about franchising, Brownstein was referred to a franchise broker who in turn introduced him to My Elder Advocate. Through one-on-one discussions with the franchisor, attending discovery day, and independent research, Brownstein eventually realized that he had found a franchise that would allow him to maintain the entrepreneurial drive that he valued.
The senior care industry
One of the leading industries in franchising currently is senior care, primarily home healthcare providers. However, My Elder Advocate resides in a niche market within the larger, emerging market: a business model that advocates for elderly clients, often on behalf of the client’s children, or other family members.
As Brownstein learned more about franchising, and how My Elder Advocate works, he decided to become a franchisee. He shares his story in this interview with Dr. John P. Hayes.
