Should You Pay Me If I Talk You Out Of Buying A Franchise?

I love the review at Amazon.com where “IronFox” says I may have talked him out of buying a franchise because I didn’t include “a bit of sizzle” in Buy Hot Franchises Without Getting Burned.

In all of my franchising seminars I always say this: “I may talk you out of buying a franchise today, and if I do, I’ve done you a great service.”

I could save you some money!

I also say, “Franchising isn’t for everyone. In fact, it’s not for most people.”

In spite of those comments (and perhaps, in fact, because of them) I am a huge proponent of franchising. I think franchising is the best way for most people who are going to get into business to own and operate a business.

I do not sell franchises.

However, my interest has never been in merely selling a franchise. First, I don’t sell them. That’s someone else’s job. What I do is help people understand if franchising makes sense for them. That’s the first critical step, but only the first.

Because I’m very good at helping people understand if franchising makes sense for them, a percentage of people who come to my seminars and read my blog and books are bound to say, “Franchising is not for me.”

Should I get paid for this?

And as a result, I save them from making the largest investment of their life and ending up in what’s likely to become a tortured and failed relationship. As I see it, those folks ought to be paying me!

Actually, franchisors ought to be paying me — I’m saving them from selling franchises to people who are not going to succeed as franchisees.
